Fawad Khan Among Judges as ‘Pakistan Idol’ Returns
Pakistan Idol Set to Make a Triumphant Return
After more than a decade since its original run, “Pakistan Idol” is gearing up for a comeback, as production company MHL Global has secured the rights from format distributor Fremantle to revive the iconic singing competition series.
The much-anticipated revival will feature a star-studded judging panel including renowned actor Fawad Khan, talented singer Zeb Bangash, qawwali maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, and Strings musician Bilal Maqsood. This revival marks a significant return for the franchise, which last graced our screens in 2014.
The original “Pakistan Idol” made its debut on Geo Entertainment in December 2013 and came to an electrifying end in April 2014, with Lahore’s own Zamad Baig clinching the coveted title. The season, judged by Bushra Ansari, Hadiqa Kiani, and Ali Azmat, garnered immense viewer engagement, with a record 1 million votes cast during the finale.
Geo TV initially acquired the Idol format rights in 2007 but faced production challenges that led to delays. The show finally hit the airwaves six years later as the 50th international adaptation of the British “Pop Idol” format.
MHL Global has ambitious plans for the reboot, with the show scheduled to air simultaneously on five television networks – a groundbreaking move for any “Idol” franchise worldwide. This multi-platform approach aims to connect with diverse audiences across Pakistan’s various regions and languages.
Zoya Merchant, director of MHL Global, expressed her excitement about the partnership with Fremantle for “Pakistan Idol,” stating, “This launch signifies more than just entertainment – it’s a cultural phenomenon. Pakistan boasts incredible musical talent, and this platform will not only showcase it nationally but also propel it onto the global stage.”
The production will blend modern digital engagement with traditional television broadcasting. Online auditions are already underway through the Begin platform, while in-person casting calls are slated for major cities and remote areas.
Production is set to kick off later this year, with broadcast specifics and premiere dates to be revealed in due course.
