FCC Chairman Brendan Carr Probes Comcast Relations With NBC Stations

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr has recently launched an investigation into Comcast’s relations with its NBC affiliates following President Trump’s call for the network to be held accountable for favoring the Democratic Party. In a letter to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, Carr expressed concerns about the national network’s increasing control over local stations, which has led to a decline in public trust in news coverage.

Carr emphasized the FCC’s interest in promoting the public interest and ensuring that local broadcast TV stations maintain their economic and operational independence to fulfill their public interest obligations. While the FCC does not have direct authority over networks or their programming, it does have some authority over economic arrangements among networks, affiliates, and cable companies.

A spokesperson for Comcast NBCU stated that the company will cooperate in responding to Carr’s questions and highlighted their longstanding support for local broadcast TV stations. They emphasized the importance of local stations as a trusted source for news and essential information, pledging to continue investing in this partnership to strengthen the broadcast business.

The FCC’s investigation comes on the heels of its approval of the Skydance-Paramount merger, which included a commitment from Skydance to install an ombudsman at CBS to address complaints about media bias. President Trump has also criticized other broadcast networks, including ABC and NBC, for allegedly favoring the Democratic Party and called for their licenses to be revoked.

In a Truth Social post, Trump criticized NBC’s viewership decline and programming quality, accusing the network of being a political arm of the Democrat Party. He also targeted other late-night talk show hosts, predicting their shows’ cancellation. The Carr letter was first reported by Newsmax, and it follows previous FCC investigations into diversity, equity, and inclusion policies at Comcast and Disney.

Overall, the FCC’s investigation into Comcast’s relations with its NBC affiliates reflects ongoing concerns about media bias and the need to uphold public trust in news coverage. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the future of broadcasting and the relationship between national networks and their local affiliates.
