FDA approves Moderna RSV vaccine use for people aged 18 to 59

The Food and Drug Administration made a significant move by expanding the approval of Moderna’s RSV vaccine to include adults aged 18 to 59 who are at high risk of severe illness from respiratory syncytial virus. This extension of the license for the vaccine, known as mResvia, was previously limited to adults aged 60 and older.

Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel expressed the importance of this approval in protecting adults with certain chronic conditions from the serious health risks posed by RSV. The company faced challenges due to skepticism surrounding its messenger RNA vaccine platform, especially from supporters of health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The approval of Moderna’s second-generation Covid-19 vaccine, mNexspike, also stirred controversy, as it imposed restrictions on the age groups eligible to receive the shots. Despite the backlash on social media, the FDA’s decision to expand the use of the RSV vaccine to a younger age group was met with positive reception.

The next step for the vaccine’s expanded use involves a recommendation from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s expert vaccines panel, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. While the committee endorsed the use of RSV vaccine in adults aged 50 to 59 with medical conditions that increase their risk, the final approval is pending.

The recent dismissal of the entire ACIP by Kennedy raised concerns about the approval process for vaccine recommendations. Despite the ongoing developments, Moderna remains committed to making mRESVIA available for both younger adults at increased risk and adults aged 60 and older for the upcoming respiratory virus season.

In conclusion, the expansion of Moderna’s RSV vaccine approval signifies a significant advancement in protecting high-risk adults from severe illness. The company continues to navigate through challenges and controversies in the evolving landscape of vaccine development and approval.
