FDA vaccine chief Dr. Vinay Prasad to leave agency next month

The FDA’s vaccine chief, Dr. Vinay Prasad, is set to leave the agency by the end of April, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Prasad, who serves as the director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), has recently made decisions that have raised concerns within the pharmaceutical industry.

One of the notable decisions made by Dr. Prasad’s department was the choice not to review an application for a new mRNA flu vaccine from pharmaceutical company Moderna. However, Moderna later resubmitted the application with different age parameters. This move sparked discussions and speculation within the industry.

Last year, Dr. Prasad had announced his decision to step down following criticism from right-wing influencer Laura Loomer. However, he was later invited back to his position by FDA Commissioner Marty Makary and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

In a post on X on Friday evening, Dr. Makary wished Dr. Prasad well in his future endeavors. He mentioned that Dr. Prasad would be returning to an academic role at the University of California San Francisco, where he had taken a one-year sabbatical.

“I want to thank him for his service and personal sacrifice to take time away from his family,” Dr. Makary expressed in the post.

The departure of Dr. Prasad comes amidst recent staff turnover at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Last month, the agency lost its acting director and is currently being led by Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, who is also fulfilling his duties at the National Institutes of Health.

These developments highlight the ongoing changes and transitions within key healthcare agencies and underscore the importance of leadership stability in ensuring effective public health decision-making.
