FedEx vows to pass any tariff refunds it gets from the U.S. on to customers
FedEx has made a bold commitment to its customers by promising to refund any tariff costs charged to them if the Trump administration reimburses the delivery company for the levies. In a statement released on Thursday, FedEx stated, “If refunds are issued to FedEx, we will issue refunds to the shippers and consumers who originally bore those charges.” The exact process for requesting and issuing refunds will depend on future guidance from the government and the court.
This decision comes after FedEx filed a lawsuit with the U.S. Court of International Trade, seeking a “full refund” of all payments made under tariff policies that were deemed illegal by the Supreme Court. The company is taking necessary steps to protect its rights as an importer of record to seek duty refunds from U.S. Customs and Border Protection following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
While the Supreme Court ruling on February 20 did not address the issue of refunds for businesses that paid tariffs imposed by President Trump last year, several companies, including Bausch + Lomb, Dyson, and L’Oreal, have filed suits seeking tariff refunds. Legal experts predict that this issue could play out in the courts and potentially drag on for years.
On Tuesday, the Liberty Justice Center, representing some of the original plaintiffs involved in the Supreme Court decision, filed coordinated motions in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the Court of International Trade to facilitate the process for refunds. A response from the government is expected by Friday.
The complexity of the situation and the involvement of various parties indicate that resolving the issue of tariff refunds will require time and legal deliberation. FedEx’s proactive stance in promising refunds to customers demonstrates its commitment to transparency and fairness in dealing with tariff-related matters.
As the situation unfolds, it is essential for businesses and consumers to stay informed about any developments regarding tariff refunds and the implications for the broader economic landscape. The outcome of this issue could have far-reaching effects on trade policies and international relations, making it a topic of significant interest and importance in the business world.
