Feds weigh assault charges for pols who protested NJ ICE center

New Jersey politicians face potential criminal charges for storming immigration detention center

The recent incident involving lefty New Jersey politicians who stormed a Newark immigration detention center has sparked controversy and potential legal repercussions. Homeland Security’s spokeswoman, Tricia McLaughlin, criticized the politicians’ actions as a desperate bid for fame at the expense of law enforcement and detainee safety. The politicians, including Reps. Robert Menendez Jr., La Monica McIver, and Bonnie Watson Coleman, as well as Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, joined protesters in calling for the closure of the Delaney Hall Detention Center.

Mayor Baraka was arrested for trespassing after refusing to leave the facility despite warnings from authorities. McLaughlin emphasized that no one is above the law, including elected officials and protesters. While Menendez, McIver, and Coleman have not been charged, the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and their potential arrests are still being considered.

Video footage provided to Fox News showed Menendez and McIver in a heated confrontation with ICE agents at a security checkpoint, with McIver appearing to physically push past the agents. McLaughlin described the behavior as potentially constituting assault and emphasized the inappropriate nature of such actions, especially coming from members of Congress.

The Democratic politicians involved have placed blame on the ICE agents for escalating the situation, while Mayor Baraka was eventually released to cheers from supporters and fellow protesters. The incident has drawn attention from various public officials and political figures, with socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani showing support for Mayor Baraka upon his release.

The situation remains under scrutiny, with potential criminal charges looming for the politicians involved. The incident serves as a reminder of the tensions surrounding immigration policies and the role of elected officials in addressing these complex issues.
