Female NYC teacher-union rep targeted by ‘disgusting’ cards in urinals: ‘Piss on my face’

A recent incident at the United Federation of Teachers’ headquarters in Manhattan has sparked outrage and condemnation from union members and leaders alike. Amy Arundell, a city teacher’s union rep who recently lost a contentious race for president, found herself the target of a disturbing act of harassment. Laminated cards featuring her image were discovered in the urinals of the men’s room at the UFT headquarters during a delegate assembly meeting.

The cards bore the message, “Piss on My Face,” a vile and misogynistic attack on Arundell. The incident has been widely condemned as a clear case of sexual harassment, workplace bullying, and psychological abuse. Arundell, who challenged President Michael Mulgrew in the election, has faced backlash and ostracization within the union hierarchy.

Mariana Pizzitola, president of the NYC Organization of Public Service Retirees and a friend of Arundell’s, expressed shock and disgust at the incident. She described it as a depraved act that reflects a hostile work environment created by Mulgrew against women. Mulgrew, while strongly condemning the harassment, has taken steps to investigate and identify the culprit responsible for the cards.

The incident has sparked discussions about the treatment of women in leadership positions within the union. Kate Anskat, a UFT member, highlighted the impact of such behavior on women in the workplace. She emphasized the need to create a safe and respectful environment for all members, especially women who may face targeted attacks and harassment.

Despite the disturbing nature of the incident, sources close to Mulgrew have defended him, stating that he would not engage in or condone such behavior. Mulgrew, a long-time ally of American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, has a history of working closely with female staff and educators in the public school system.

As the investigation into the harassment continues, the UFT is emphasizing the importance of unity and respect within the union. Mulgrew has called for accountability and a commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all members. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by women in leadership roles and the need to address issues of harassment and discrimination in the workplace.
