Tragedy Strikes: 23 Dead in Mexico Convenience Store Fire
MEXICO CITY — A devastating fire and explosion at a convenience store in northwestern Mexico claimed the lives of at least 23 individuals, including children, and left 12 others injured, according to state authorities.
The tragic incident took place in downtown Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora state, as confirmed by Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo in a video shared on social media.
Sonora Attorney General Gustavo Salas Chávez revealed the grim death toll and disclosed that the injured individuals were promptly transported to six hospitals in Hermosillo for urgent medical attention.
Preliminary investigations conducted by Salas Chávez’s team pointed towards the cause of death being linked to the “inhalation of toxic gases.”
“At this time we have no indication that leads us to presume the fire was intentional,” stated Salas Chávez, emphasizing that all possible avenues of inquiry were being explored.
Social media platforms were flooded with images capturing the massive blaze that engulfed the Waldo’s store. A harrowing video depicted a severely burned individual collapsing just a few meters from the store’s entrance.
