Fire at popular nightclub in India’s Goa state kills at least 25, officials say

NEW DELHI — Tragedy struck in India’s popular tourist destination of Goa as a fire at a nightclub claimed the lives of at least 25 people, including tourists, according to the state’s chief minister.

The incident took place in the early hours of the morning in Arpora, a bustling party spot in North Goa.

Most of the victims were identified as kitchen staff of the nightclub, with a few tourists among the deceased. Six others sustained injuries but are said to be in stable condition.

The fire, which was caused by a gas cylinder blast, has since been put out. Local police confirmed that all bodies have been recovered, with reports indicating that the fire broke out while around 100 people were on the dance floor, causing chaos and trapping many in the kitchen area below.

The nightclub’s location along the river backwaters presented challenges for firefighters due to limited access, delaying their efforts to contain the blaze.

Authorities had previously issued a demolition notice for the club for operating without proper permits, but the order was rescinded by higher officials, according to local village council official Roshan Redkar.

An inquiry has been launched by the state government to determine the cause of the fire and assess compliance with safety regulations, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and assured support for the affected families.

India’s lax enforcement of regulations has often led to safety hazards, with incidents involving gas cylinders highlighting the need for stricter safety protocols.

Goa, renowned for its sandy beaches, remains a cherished destination for travelers despite the tragic events that unfolded in the state.
