‘Firefly’ Revival Being Developed as an Animated Series: Nathan Fillion

Firefly fans, rejoice! The beloved cult hit series is making a comeback in the form of an animated show. Nathan Fillion, who portrayed the charismatic Captain Mal Reynolds, has confirmed the exciting news. The new animated series will be set between the original TV show, which aired in 2002, and the 2005 film “Serenity.”

According to Deadline, Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters will be the showrunners, with animation studio ShadowMachine handling the visuals. Fillion’s Collision33 is working in collaboration with 20th Television Animation to bring this project to life.

Fillion shared the news at the recent AwesomeCon event in Washington, D.C. and also discussed it on the “Once We Were Spacemen” podcast, which he co-hosts with Alan Tudyk, who played Wash in the series.

Fans were given a hint of the revival through cryptic social media videos featuring Fillion and several of his co-stars, including Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, and Summer Glau. The original cast members seem to be on board for this new animated adventure.

“Firefly” originally aired in 2002 and followed the crew of the spaceship Serenity in the year 2517, set against the backdrop of a global civil war 500 years into the future. Despite its short-lived run of only 11 episodes, the series gained a dedicated fan base and became a cult phenomenon.

The show’s cancellation by Fox was met with disappointment from fans and critics alike. However, the unique blend of western and science fiction elements, along with Joss Whedon’s signature wit, made “Firefly” a standout in the television landscape.

With the announcement of the animated series, fans can look forward to revisiting the beloved characters and exploring new adventures in the ‘Verse. Stay tuned for more updates on this highly anticipated revival of “Firefly.”
