Flaco Jimenez, Texas Accordionist Who Expanded Popularity Of Conjunto And Tejano Music, Dies At 86
Flaco Jimenez, the renowned accordionist from San Antonio known for his contribution to conjunto, Tejano, and Tex-Mex music, passed away at the age of 86, as announced by his family on social media. He died in the San Antonio home of his son Arturo Jimenez, surrounded by loved ones. His son shared that Flaco had been at peace and ready to go, expressing pride in his accomplishments and leaving behind memories for his fans to cherish. Flaco had been hospitalized due to health issues earlier in the year, and the cause of his death has not been confirmed yet.
Born Leonardo Jimenez in 1939, he followed in the footsteps of his father, Santiago Jimenez, a pioneering figure in conjunto music. Flaco’s influence on the genre was significant, as he skillfully blended various musical styles like country, rock, and jazz into conjunto music. He honed his craft by performing in Texas venues and collaborating with artists such as Douglas Sahm and even icons like Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones.
Flaco’s legacy extends beyond his Grammy wins and accolades to his impact on the cultural heritage of Tejano communities in Texas. His ability to incorporate the accordion into diverse genres set him apart as a true innovator in music. During the 1990s, Jimenez was a member of the Tejano supergroup the Texas Tornados, alongside Sahm, Augie Meyers, and Freddy Fender. The group achieved Grammy success in 1991 with the song “Soy de San Luis.”
Jimenez also received another Grammy in 1999 as part of the supergroup Los Super Seven.
With a total of five Grammy wins, Jimenez was honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015.
His contributions to music led to inductions into the National Hispanic Hall of Fame, NYC International Latin Music Hall of Fame, and the title of Texas State Musician in 2014.
Describing his father as a humble musician focused on connecting with his fans through music, Arturo Jimenez shared touching moments where fans expressed gratitude for the impact of his music on their lives.
Upon being named a 2022 National Medal of Arts recipient, the White House praised Jimenez for his ability to blend various music genres to showcase the soul of America’s Southwest.
Reflecting on his impact, the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of Fame and Museum expressed gratitude for Jimenez’s musical legacy that brought joy to countless fans.
Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, recognized Jimenez as a pioneer of Tejano conjunto music who introduced millions to a rich musical landscape.
San Antonio remained a significant place in Jimenez’s heart, where he lived his entire life, as noted by his son, Arturo Jimenez.
Known as “el hijo de San Antonio,” Jimenez’s connection to the city remained strong throughout his life, as shared by his son, Arturo Jimenez.
A private funeral service will be held for Jimenez, followed by a public celebration of his life.
