Florida AM Marching 100 announcer Joe Bullard Ozempic joke at Alabama State University Honey Beez

The announcer for a historically black university marching band is facing criticism for making derogatory remarks about a plus-size dance team during a recent football game. Joe Bullard, the announcer for Florida A&M’s Marching 100, joked about the size of Alabama State University’s Honey Beez dancers during halftime of a game between the two schools.

Bullard’s comment, referring to the dancers as the “new face of Ozempic,” drew jeers from the crowd and sparked outrage on social media. The Honey Beez, founded in 2004, is made up of plus-sized female students who perform alongside the ASU Mighty Marching Hornets. The minimum weight requirement to be part of the group is between 230 and 250 pounds.

Ozempic is a prescription medication used for weight loss in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The Honey Beez gained popularity after their appearance during a halftime show created a buzz among the audience, leading them to become a regular part of game day performances.

Bullard later issued an apology on Facebook, acknowledging that his comments were hurtful and disrespectful. He has been the announcer for FAMU’s band for 50 seasons and expressed regret for his words, stating that he never intended to belittle the students.

ASU President Dr. Quinton T. Ross condemned Bullard’s remarks as “distasteful” and expressed support for the Honey Beez and the Mighty Marching Hornets. He reassured the dancers that they are valued and admired for their talent and artistry.

Florida State A&M President Marva Johnson also addressed the incident, promising accountability and emphasizing the commitment to upholding the dignity and excellence of HBCU institutions.

Despite the controversy, the Hornets football team went on to score 28 points in the second half and defeat the Rattlers with a score of 42-14. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting all individuals and celebrating diversity within the HBCU community.
