Florida mall heist: Thieves cut hole in mall roof, steal $50,000 in sneakers
Thieves in Florida took the iconic Nike slogan “Just Do It” to a whole new level in a daring heist that left authorities baffled. Masked robbers went to great lengths to steal 400 to 500 pairs of Nike and New Balance sneakers from a Champs Sporting Goods store at the Treasure Coast Mall in Jensen Beach.
The robbers cut a hole in the concrete roof of the mall and descended into the storage room where the sneakers were kept sometime between midnight and 8 a.m. on Tuesday. The Martin County Sheriff’s Office described the crime as reminiscent of a Hollywood movie heist, with the stolen merchandise being bagged, tagged, thrown off the roof, and loaded into a getaway vehicle. Some of the stolen goods were left behind at the scene.
The stolen sneakers are estimated to be worth between $40,000 and $50,000, and the damage caused by the robbers will cost an additional $10,000 to repair. Sheriff John Budensiek compared the burglary to something out of “Mission Impossible,” highlighting the sophistication and organization of the criminals involved. He emphasized that the robbers used electric tools, likely a grinder or saw, to cut through the roof without being detected for hours.
The investigation into the crime is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Martin County Sheriff’s Office at 772-220-7060. The brazen nature of the robbery has captured the attention of residents and law enforcement alike, as they work to apprehend those responsible for this audacious crime.
