Florida man accused of murdering suicidal UK woman who traveled to US seeking a violent death: reports

A tragic incident unfolded in Marion County, Florida, where a 32-year-old woman from the United Kingdom, Sonia Exelby, was found dead in a shallow grave. Exelby had traveled to the US with the intention of being killed, leading to a disturbing chain of events that ended in her murder.

Exelby’s partner, Stevie, raised the alarm when she missed her return flight to Portsmouth, England. He took to Instagram to express his deep concern for her well-being, highlighting her struggles with mental health. UK authorities alerted Florida law enforcement about Exelby’s disappearance, indicating that she may have traveled to the US to meet individuals who would facilitate her violent demise.

The investigation led authorities to 53-year-old Dwain Hall, who had connected with Exelby on a fetish website two years prior. Hall positioned himself as a mentor to Exelby and offered to help her, eventually meeting her at the Gainesville Regional Airport and taking her to an Airbnb in Reddick, Florida.

During their time together, Hall engaged in sexual activities with Exelby and recorded a video showing her covered in bruises. In the video, Exelby expressed self-loathing and mentioned feeling like she had hurt everyone who loved her. Hall pressured her to consent to being harmed, a situation that left Exelby visibly upset and hesitant.

Tragically, Exelby messaged a friend on Discord expressing doubts about the situation, indicating that Hall was prolonging her suffering. Investigators later discovered Exelby’s lifeless body in a shallow grave, revealing that she had been fatally stabbed four times. Evidence linked Hall to the crime, including a shovel with traces of Exelby’s DNA and a knife with blood that he had sent to a friend in Ohio.

Hall was arrested on charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, credit card fraud, and unlawful use of a communication device. He remains in custody without bond, awaiting court hearings for his charges. The details of this disturbing case shed light on the complexities of mental health struggles and the dangers of vulnerable individuals falling prey to manipulative predators.
