Florida officials warn about risks of drinking raw milk after 21 people sickened
The Florida Department of Health has issued a warning regarding the dangers of consuming raw, unpasteurized milk following an outbreak of E. coli and campylobacter bacteria that has sickened 21 individuals, including six children under the age of 10. Out of the affected individuals, seven have been hospitalized, with two experiencing severe complications.
The department expressed concerns about the sanitation practices at the farm linked to the outbreak, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance in such cases. Although the farm in question was not named, it was noted that its products are distributed in Northeast and Central Florida.
In Florida, the sale of raw milk for human consumption is illegal, but it can be marketed as pet food. Despite this restriction, the popularity of raw milk has surged in recent years, fueled by online wellness influencers and raw food advocates. However, health officials caution against its consumption due to the potential health risks associated with it.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have highlighted the presence of life-threatening bacteria, such as E. coli, campylobacter, listeria, and salmonella, in raw milk. These bacteria can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach cramps, with severe cases resulting in hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and kidney failure.
According to the FDA, there have been 143 outbreaks linked to raw milk or raw milk products since 1987, some of which have resulted in miscarriages, stillbirths, kidney failure, and even fatalities. Pasteurization, a process that involves heating the milk to eliminate harmful bacteria, is mandated by federal law for milk sold across state lines.
While some states allow the sale of raw milk, others have imposed restrictions or outright bans on its distribution. Mark McAfee, a prominent figure in the raw milk industry, has touted the health benefits of raw milk, claiming that it contains bioactives that enhance the immune system. However, the CDC refutes these claims, stating that pasteurized milk offers the same nutritional benefits without the associated risks.
