Florida Couple Arrested After Twins Shoot Themselves with Unsecured Gun
A Florida couple, Keishara Goodrum, 39, and Maurice Wayne Bright Jr., 40, were taken into custody following a tragic incident where their four-year-old twins accidentally shot themselves with a loaded handgun they found hidden under a couch cushion. The children sustained critical injuries, including one with a gunshot wound to the arm, while playing in the living room of their Orlando home, as reported by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Goodrum admitted to police that she had been heavily intoxicated the night before and had carelessly left her firearm under the couch cushion because she was not wearing clothing with a waistband, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Post.
The next morning, chaos ensued when a loud gunshot was heard in the house. Goodrum, who was preparing breakfast for her children, rushed to find one of the twins injured with a bullet wound near the arm. It was then realized that the other twin also had a significant amount of blood on his shirt, indicating he had also been shot.
Both children were immediately taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children for urgent medical attention. They are currently in critical but stable condition.
Upon further investigation, authorities discovered three additional firearms inside the family home, raising concerns about the safety of the household.
Goodrum was charged with two counts of child neglect resulting in great bodily harm, while Bright faced charges of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon.
As a result of the incident, the Department of Children and Families has taken custody of the couple’s children for their safety and well-being, as reported by WFTV.
Both parents are currently being held on $10,000 bonds as they await further legal proceedings.
