Florida’s Operation Dragon Eye rescues dozens of ‘critically missing’ children in massive sting

Operation Dragon Eye: 60 Children Rescued in Florida Anti-Trafficking Operation

In a significant blow to child sex trafficking operations in Florida, officials announced the successful rescue of dozens of children in a major operation. Dubbed Operation Dragon Eye, this initiative was led by the US Marshals Office for the Central District of Florida, with support from the state Attorney General James Uthmeier’s Office of Statewide Prosecution (OSP).

A collaborative effort involving 20 agencies, Operation Dragon Eye aimed to locate 60 critically missing children and apprehend suspects involved in trafficking, drugs, and child endangerment. Attorney General Uthmeier emphasized the importance of protecting children, stating that those who victimize children will face severe consequences.

The rescued children, ranging in age from 9 to 17, were at risk of being exploited and were classified as “critically missing” by the US Marshals Service. This designation is given to children at risk of violence, substance abuse, sexual exploitation, crime exposure, or domestic violence.

The operation uncovered heartbreaking realities of sex trafficking, including young girls who were pregnant, with one carrying the child of her trafficker. Following their rescue, each child received immediate medical evaluations and psychological support, with long-term care plans put in place.

US Marshal William Berger highlighted the unique aspect of the operation, which focused on providing physical and psychological care to the rescued children to prevent further victimization. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) played a crucial role in the operation, assuring parents of missing children that they will never stop searching until every child is brought home safely.

Eight individuals were arrested during the operation on charges including human trafficking, child endangerment, drug possession, and drug trafficking. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed as the case progresses.

Sex trafficking remains a persistent threat in Florida, with the state ranking among the top three in the nation for reported human trafficking cases. In response to this alarming trend, Florida leaders have allocated funding and implemented legislative efforts to combat trafficking and support victims.

Governor Ron DeSantis recently allocated $4.9 million to expand emergency shelter beds and staff support for trafficking victims, demonstrating the state’s commitment to addressing this issue. Additional grant funding was provided to the FDLE to support their efforts in combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals.

Operation Dragon Eye serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of collaborative efforts in fighting child exploitation and trafficking. By working together and prioritizing the safety and well-being of children, law enforcement agencies and government officials can make a lasting impact in the fight against human trafficking.
