Flying Saucer RV park would close if Sheridan OKs land redevelopment plan

Many residents of the Flying Saucer RV park in Sheridan have made it their long-term home, turning their rented spots into year-round residences complete with yards, outdoor decks, and gardens. However, the land is now under contract to a development company that plans to build an apartment complex on the site. Unlike mobile home park residents who have certain protections under state law, RV park residents do not have the right to make an offer to buy the land.

Steve Ohlfest and his wife, who have lived at Flying Saucer for 20 years, are concerned about where they will go if the city council approves the proposal to build the apartment complex. The city planning commission will review the rezoning application on Oct. 1 and make a recommendation to the city council.

If approved, construction on the 362-unit apartment complex could start in spring or summer of 2026. Residents like Chad Parades and his wife, who have received an eviction notice, are already looking for alternative housing options.

Ohlfest has been trying to inform residents about the planned sale through his website, saveflyingsaucer.com. The uncertainty of the situation has left many residents anxious and unsure about their future.

An RV park by any other name?

The property owners have not communicated updates to the residents, leaving many in the dark about the future of Flying Saucer. State laws that protect mobile home park residents do not apply to RV parks, creating a complex situation for the current residents.

While the future of Flying Saucer remains uncertain, residents are exploring their options and trying to find a solution to their housing dilemma. The possibility of the park being considered a more permanent housing site is being looked into, which could potentially provide residents with more rights and protections.

As the debate around housing affordability continues, it is clear that many residents are facing challenges in finding affordable and stable housing options. The high cost of housing is putting many at risk of displacement, highlighting the need for more affordable housing solutions.
