The Test Must Go On: Fordham Law Grad Goes into Cardiac Arrest During Bar Exam
A Fordham Law grad experienced a medical emergency while taking the bar exam at Hofstra University, causing concern among other test-takers. The incident occurred on the second day of the New York State Bar Examination, where the woman went into cardiac arrest inside the sports complex on the university campus.
Reports from Newsday and ABC 7 revealed that despite the woman’s medical distress, the exam proctors did not immediately pause the exam to address the situation. Test-takers expressed their shock and distress at having to continue with the exam while a fellow student was in critical condition.
The incident took place just before a lunch break, with the woman falling from her chair and requiring immediate medical attention. Public safety officers administered CPR until paramedics arrived and transported her to a local hospital for further treatment.
Upon returning from lunch, test-takers found the situation resolved, but the emotional impact lingered. Many students expressed concern for the woman’s well-being and questioned the decision to continue the exam under such circumstances.
The state Board of Law Examiners defended the proctors’ actions, stating that the incident occurred near the end of the exam session and that staff responded promptly once alerted to the situation.
Despite the board’s reassurances, some students felt that more urgency was needed in handling the medical emergency. Witnesses reported that surrounding students were in tears and urged proctors to seek assistance more quickly.
Applicants must pass the New York State Bar Examination to practice law in the state. The shocking incident during the exam raised questions about the handling of medical emergencies in high-pressure testing environments.
In the aftermath of the incident, Nicole Lefton, a Hofstra Law School instructor, offered support to test-takers who may have been affected by witnessing the medical emergency. She acknowledged the impact it may have had on students and assured them that support services were available.
Ultimately, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing the well-being of individuals in distress, even in high-stakes situations like bar exams.
