Former AOC backer has stark warning for young Mamdani fans
A former supporter of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) has issued a cautionary message for young voters in New York City following socialist Zohran Mamdani’s recent Democratic primary win. Lucy Biggers, a media professional, shared her perspective in a video posted on X, highlighting the potential drawbacks of socialist policies.
In her video, Biggers acknowledged that she would have been drawn to Mamdani’s platform if she were younger, citing the allure of promises like free college, food, and housing. However, she emphasized that such programs often lead to wealthier individuals leaving the city to avoid higher taxes, leaving the remaining residents burdened with increased taxes and little to show for it.
Biggers, who played a role in boosting AOC’s profile in 2018, reflected on her past support for the congresswoman. She produced a viral video for Now This, which Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign later used as a digital ad to promote her message. Despite her initial enthusiasm for AOC’s progressive agenda, Biggers now sees things differently, particularly in light of the economic impact of government spending during the pandemic.
As someone who has transitioned into homeownership and motherhood, Biggers has come to view the glorification of socialism among young people as naive and misguided. She pointed out the lack of awareness about the failures of socialist regimes in countries like Cuba, Venezuela, and the USSR, cautioning against idealizing such systems.
While acknowledging the genuine enthusiasm behind Mamdani’s campaign, Biggers expressed skepticism about the feasibility of his proposed policies, likening them to a “fantasy” that ultimately falls short. She drew parallels between Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani, noting the similarities in their appeal to young voters seeking change.
Both Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani declined to comment on Biggers’ remarks, underscoring the ongoing debate over the efficacy of socialist policies in American politics. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the voices of former supporters like Biggers serve as a reminder of the complexities and challenges associated with implementing progressive agendas.
