Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner weighs in on Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension
Former Disney CEO Michael Eisner has come to the defense of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel after the Disney-owned ABC network suspended him indefinitely from his show, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Eisner took to social media to express his support for Kimmel and criticize ABC’s decision to suspend him.
In a post on X on Friday, Eisner questioned where leadership had gone and called on university presidents, law firm managing partners, and corporate chief executives to stand up against bullies and protect the first amendment. He spoke out just two days after ABC confirmed the suspension of Kimmel following remarks he made about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The network has not provided any information on when or if the show will return.
Eisner, who led Disney for over two decades, made it clear that he disagreed with ABC’s decision to suspend Kimmel. He criticized the network’s response to pressure from Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr, who called Kimmel’s comments “some of the sickest conduct possible” and suggested a path forward for suspension. Eisner viewed this as an example of out-of-control intimidation and defended Kimmel’s right to freedom of speech.
Expressing his admiration for Kimmel’s talent and humor, Eisner questioned the actions taken by ABC and other companies in response to public remarks about Kirk’s death and political views. He highlighted a trend of dismissals and sanctions against employees for expressing their opinions, calling for a more respectful and tolerant approach to differing viewpoints.
Eisner’s comments reflect a broader conversation around free speech, censorship, and accountability in the media industry. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how ABC and other companies will navigate the complex intersection of politics, entertainment, and public discourse.
