Former Hamas hostage warned leaders of rising antisemitism months before deadly Bondi Beach shooting

A former Hamas hostage, Eli Sharabi, recently spoke out about his warnings to Australian leaders regarding rising antisemitism months before the tragic shooting at Bondi Beach. Sharabi, who spent 491 days as a captive in Gaza, expressed his concerns to Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Foreign Minister Penny Wong during his visit to Australia in June. He cautioned them about the escalating antisemitism and predicted that it would lead to a hate crime.

Sharabi vividly recalled telling the officials that they needed to take a stronger stance against antisemitism to prevent future tragedies. Sadly, his warnings proved to be true when the deadly shooting occurred at Bondi Beach, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. Despite not understanding why he made those predictions at the time, Sharabi deeply regrets the outcome.

In response to Sharabi’s warnings, Wong’s spokesperson stated that the minister has consistently condemned antisemitism and has taken steps to strengthen laws against those who spread hate. Additionally, efforts are being made to address online abuse, educate the public about antisemitism, and cancel visas for individuals promoting antisemitic ideologies.

The Bondi Beach attack, which took place during a Hanukkah celebration, deeply affected Sharabi, reminding him of the persecution faced by European Jews in the 1940s. He emphasized the need to combat such hatred and violence in the modern world.

After being released from captivity in Gaza on February 8, 2025, Sharabi discovered the tragic fate of his wife and daughters, who were killed during a Hamas terrorist attack in Israel. Since his release, he has been advocating for the freedom of all hostages, including his friend Alon Ohel, whom he bonded with during captivity.

Sharabi now cherishes his freedom and appreciates every moment of his life. He acknowledges the support he received from people around the world during his captivity and is grateful for the opportunity to make choices freely. Despite facing challenges in returning to his former home in Be’eri, Sharabi is determined to seek a fresh start in central Israel.

As he continues his journey of healing and recovery, Sharabi remains hopeful for a peaceful and quiet life. His story serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
