Former Peruvian President Vizcarra gets 14 years in prison in corruption case

In a shocking development, former President Martín Vizcarra of Peru has been handed a 14-year prison sentence for his involvement in a corruption scandal dating back to his time as governor of Moquegua. The court found Vizcarra guilty of accepting bribes from construction companies in exchange for lucrative government contracts, including projects for an irrigation system and a hospital.

Vizcarra, who was immediately taken into custody, has also been banned from holding any public office for nine years. The prosecution alleged that he had received over $600,000 in illegal payments from the companies involved.

Although prosecutors had sought a 15-year sentence, the court’s decision marks a significant fall from grace for Vizcarra, once hailed as a reformist leader in Peru.
