Former Red Sox pitcher Austin Maddox sentenced to 3 years in prison for soliciting a minor
Former Boston Red Sox pitcher Austin Maddox has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to charges related to an underage sex sting operation. Maddox, 34, entered a guilty plea for meeting a minor to engage in unlawful acts and unlawful use of a two-way communications device. In exchange for his plea, Florida prosecutors dropped a charge of soliciting a child via computer.
Maddox, who had already served 501 days in jail, will receive credit for time served. Upon his release, he will also be placed on five years of sex offender probation. The judge, Lindsay Tygart, handed down the sentence, noting that Maddox could have faced up to five years in prison.
In April 2024, Maddox was one of 27 individuals arrested in a sting operation targeting individuals soliciting sex from what they believed were underage individuals online. Maddox had arranged to meet with a girl at a specified location, where he was apprehended by law enforcement.
A former University of Florida college baseball player, Maddox was drafted by the Red Sox in 2012. He eventually made his major league debut in 2017 after spending several years in the minor leagues. At the time of his arrest, Maddox was already on probation as a drug offender, having been arrested in Baker County in November 2022.
This incident has tarnished the once-promising career of Austin Maddox, who now faces a significant prison sentence and the stigma of being a registered sex offender. The downfall of a professional athlete serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of criminal behavior and the importance of making responsible choices.
