Foundation makes post quantum security a top priority as new team forms
The Ethereum Foundation (EF) is ramping up its efforts to address quantum computing risks by launching a dedicated Post Quantum team. This move represents a major strategic shift for the organization, signaling a heightened focus on bolstering Ethereum’s security in the face of emerging threats.
Led by Thomas Coratger, with support from Emile, the Post Quantum team will spearhead the development of new cryptographic tools and protocols designed to protect Ethereum against potential quantum attacks. EF researcher Justin Drake emphasized the importance of accelerating timelines and transitioning from research to practical implementation in order to stay ahead of the curve.
The announcement comes at a time when the crypto community is increasingly aware of the potential risks posed by quantum computing. Quantum processors have the potential to break traditional encryption methods, posing a threat to the security of blockchain networks. While the practical implications of quantum computing remain a longer-term concern, the need to preemptively address these risks is becoming more urgent.
In response to these challenges, Ethereum is taking proactive steps to enhance its security posture. A bi-weekly developer session focused on post quantum transactions is set to kick off next month, led by Antonio Sanso. The agenda includes developing user-facing defenses, implementing cryptographic tools within the protocol, and exploring innovative approaches to transaction security.
Additionally, EF is investing in cryptography research through initiatives like the $1 million Poseidon Prize and the Proximity Prize. These initiatives aim to strengthen cryptographic functions and advance post quantum research within the Ethereum ecosystem.
On the engineering front, multi-client post quantum consensus development networks are already operational, with multiple teams collaborating and conducting weekly interoperability calls. This collaborative effort is crucial for ensuring a smooth transition to quantum-resistant protocols and maintaining network integrity.
Looking ahead, Ethereum plans to engage the community through events, educational initiatives, and outreach efforts. A post quantum event is scheduled for October, with a dedicated post quantum day preceding EthCC in late March. These events will provide a platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and collaboration within the Ethereum community.
