France honors the victims of the Paris attacks’ night of terror 10 years on

On November 13, 2015, Paris was struck by coordinated terrorist attacks that left a lasting mark on the city. Ten years later, the memory of that fateful night still lingers, as Parisians gather to honor the 132 people who lost their lives and hundreds more who were injured in the attacks.

President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo are leading tributes at each attack site, starting at the Stade de France where the first victim was killed. The commemorations will then move to the café terraces in the 10th and 11th arrondissements before culminating at the Bataclan concert hall.

Families of the victims will stand closest to the plaques for each minute of silence, with a special wreath-laying ceremony to honor their loved ones. At Place de la République, Parisians are leaving candles, flowers, and notes at the foot of the statue of Marianne, a symbol of unity and resilience.

A new memorial garden, Jardin du 13-Novembre, has been created opposite City Hall to pay tribute to the victims. The garden features the names of those who were killed on granite stelae, with plantings that reflect the attack sites and benches for reflection.

As the city remembers the tragic events of that night, the Eiffel Tower will be lit in the colors of the French flag, and the French soccer federation will observe a minute of silence during a World Cup qualifier match.

For survivors of the attacks, the anniversary brings back painful memories and emotions. Arthur Dénouveaux, a survivor who leads the Life for Paris association, reflects on the difficulty of healing and learning to live with the trauma.

Despite the somber tone of the day, the message from officials and families is clear: to remember the victims, honor the responders, and preserve the ordinary pleasures of life that the attackers sought to destroy. The goal is to grieve without spectacle and to create space for memory while honoring the resilience of the living.

As Paris pays tribute to the victims of the 2015 attacks, the city stands united in remembrance and solidarity.
