France summons US ambassador over ‘unacceptable’ letter about antisemitism

France has taken a diplomatic stand against the United States after American ambassador to Paris, Charles Kushner, wrote a letter to French President Emmanuel Macron accusing the country of not doing enough to combat antisemitism. The French foreign ministry has summoned Kushner to appear at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs to address his allegations, calling them “unacceptable.”

Kushner, a real-estate developer and the father of President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, has sparked controversy with his accusations against France. The French government has firmly rejected these claims, stating that they have fully mobilized to combat a rise in antisemitic acts following the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The contents of Kushner’s letter to President Macron have not been disclosed, but the French foreign ministry has condemned his actions as a violation of international law and an interference in the internal affairs of another country. They have emphasized the importance of maintaining the quality of the transatlantic partnership between France and the United States.

This diplomatic rift comes on the heels of Macron’s rejection of accusations from Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that France’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state is fueling antisemitism. France is home to the largest Jewish population in Western Europe, with an estimated 500,000 Jews, constituting approximately 1% of the national population.

The strained relations between France and the U.S. this year, including tensions over Trump’s trade war and disagreements over the future of U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon, have added to the current discord. The U.S. push to wind down the peacekeeping operation known as UNIFIL has been met with objections from France, with a U.N. Security Council vote on the issue scheduled for the end of the month.

Despite these challenges, there have been recent signs of easing tensions between France and the U.S., particularly in their support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Trump’s expression of support for security guarantees and his positive meeting with Macron and other European leaders at the White House last week indicate a potential thaw in relations.

It is worth noting that Charles Kushner was pardoned by Trump at the end of his first term as president, despite pleading guilty years earlier to tax evasion and making illegal campaign donations. His son Jared Kushner, a former White House senior adviser to Trump, is married to Trump’s eldest daughter, Ivanka.

Overall, the diplomatic dispute between France and the U.S. highlights the complexities of international relations and the importance of maintaining respectful dialogue and cooperation between allies.
