Fraudster Steals $36,000,000 From Medicare, Splurges on Luxury Items, Large Home and Rolls-Royce
A recent case in Florida has shed light on a healthcare fraud scheme that defrauded Medicare out of millions of dollars. Sean Alterman, a 38-year-old man, has pleaded guilty to running this fraudulent operation, which involved deceptive practices and manipulation of the healthcare system.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Alterman confessed to orchestrating a scheme that exploited Medicare through fraudulent claims. He owned and operated two healthcare labs, using them as a front to purchase orders for expensive genetic testing from patient recruiters. These recruiters would then use deceptive tactics to persuade patients to undergo these tests, all while billing Medicare for the services.
One of the key tactics Alterman employed in his scheme was ‘doctor chasing,’ a method where misleading requests are sent to doctors to trick them into approving the tests. Through this method, Alterman managed to secure a staggering $36 million in medical claims from Medicare, siphoning off $5.5 million for himself through shell corporations.
Authorities revealed that Alterman used some of the ill-gotten funds to purchase luxury items, including a large home and a Rolls-Royce, both of which have now been seized. Alterman has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and conspiracy to offer and pay kickbacks. He is set to be sentenced on April 16th and could face up to 15 years in prison for his crimes.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of healthcare fraud and the lengths to which individuals will go to exploit the system for personal gain. It also highlights the importance of vigilance and oversight in combating fraudulent activities within the healthcare industry.
