Freshman QB Byrd Ficklin shines in first start as Utah runs over Colorado for 53-7 victory
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Dominates Colorado in 53-7 Victory
In a stunning display of offensive firepower, freshman quarterback Byrd Ficklin led the Utah Utes to a resounding 53-7 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes on Saturday night. Ficklin, making his first career start in place of injured starter Devon Dampier, showcased his dual-threat ability by passing for two touchdowns and rushing for another.
Ficklin’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he amassed 291 total yards of offense, including 163 rushing yards and a touchdown in the first half alone. His dynamic playmaking ability kept the Colorado defense on its heels throughout the game.
Joining Ficklin in the offensive onslaught was running back Wayshawn Parker, who contributed 145 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries. The Utes’ ground game was unstoppable, racking up a season-high 422 rushing yards and averaging over 12 yards per carry.
On the other side of the ball, the Colorado offense struggled to find any rhythm against a relentless Utah defense. Quarterback Kaidon Salter was under constant pressure, completing just 9 of 22 passes for 37 yards and throwing an interception. The Buffaloes finished with a mere 140 total yards and averaged just 2.1 yards per play.
Utah’s dominance was evident from the opening kickoff, as they raced out to a 43-0 halftime lead behind Ficklin’s two touchdown passes and long-distance runs by Parker. The Utes’ explosive offense and suffocating defense left Colorado with no answers as they cruised to their sixth win of the season and secured bowl eligibility.
With the win, Utah improved to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the Big 12 conference, while Colorado fell to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The Buffaloes will look to bounce back when they host Arizona next Saturday, while the Utes will face off against Cincinnati at home.
