From TV weatherman to dentist, FundSeeder finds hidden talent
Brian Lovern’s journey from local TV weatherman to successful Wall Street trader is a story of determination and expertise. Starting his career in western Kentucky, pointing at storm systems on a green screen, Lovern eventually found himself analyzing natural gas price charts and turning forecasts into profits, with annual returns exceeding 100%.
After working on weather desks at hedge funds and investment banks, Lovern decided to start trading his own money in 2016. Combining his knowledge of weather models with fundamentals like daily gas production and export flows, he achieved impressive gains, with his best year being a 140% return in 2018.
Lovern’s success caught the attention of FundSeeder, a platform founded by renowned trader and author Jack Schwager, known for his “Market Wizards” book series profiling successful traders like Paul Tudor Jones and Stanley Druckenmiller. FundSeeder seeks out under-the-radar trading talent globally and provides them with capital to grow their strategies.
Schwager believes there are many talented traders around the world who are unknown outside of their local markets. FundSeeder’s endorsement provides these traders with legitimacy and access to resources they may not have had otherwise. Recently, Lovern was backed with $3 million to scale his strategy, joining other successful traders like Adam Williams, a 35-year-old energy derivatives trader from the U.K., who received $10 million in funding.
To further support emerging trading talent, FundSeeder has launched the FundSeeder Accelerator, likening it to the Y Combinator for traders. This initiative aims to provide infrastructure, mentorship, and capital for traders to grow their funds successfully. The backing from FundSeeder can be crucial for traders trying to raise funds and attract larger investments.
The barriers to entry in the hedge fund industry can be daunting for emerging managers, but FundSeeder Accelerator aims to level the playing field. Selected traders will have the opportunity to present their strategies at an industry conference in Miami in early 2026, showcasing their talent to potential investors and industry insiders. With initiatives like FundSeeder Accelerator, the next generation of top fund managers may just be waiting to be discovered.
