Futuristic flying EV maker is latest jobs bloodbath to hit California — as it lays off 80% of staff

Hyundai Cuts 80% of Staff from Futuristic Flying EV Company in California

Hyundai has made a significant cut of 80% of its staff from Supernal, a futuristic flying EV company based in California, delivering another blow to businesses in the state.

Supernal, known for its vertical take-off prototypes, recently announced the elimination of 296 jobs at its facilities in Orange County, Fremont, and Mojave.

The startup, valued at $1.7 billion, which moved from Washington DC to California three years ago, stated that it would centralize its operations at its Irvine headquarters.

According to a spokesman cited by the Orange County Register, the decision to reduce staff is a strategic move to optimize staffing and cost structures for long-term success in aircraft design aligned with market demands.

Hyundai Motor Group reaffirmed its commitment to the Advanced Air Mobility business, with Supernal acting as the dedicated execution arm for aircraft development.

The focus now shifts to stabilizing the company, developing a new business model, and creating a commercially viable aircraft.

Hyundai restructured the leadership at Supernal in September and has encountered challenges with test flights for autonomous EVs in Mojave.

Following a 10% reduction in workforce last summer, only 80 employees remain at the company.

This downsizing adds to the trend of businesses scaling back in California due to high taxes, with major companies like Gallo closing facilities and cutting jobs.

Last week, the Post reported on Gallo’s closure of a large Napa Valley production site, resulting in the loss of nearly 100 jobs.
