FX Publicity Icon John Solberg to Depart After Nearly 30 Years

John Solberg, the longtime head of communications at FX, has announced his decision to step down from his position when his contract expires in January. Solberg has been with FX for over 28 years, starting as the director of media relations and working his way up to EVP of publicity. During his time at FX, Solberg played a pivotal role in the network’s transition from airing repeats of primetime shows to producing critically acclaimed and award-winning series.

One of Solberg’s most significant contributions was the successful launch of “The Shield,” which earned star Michael Chiklis an Emmy in 2002, marking the first time an actor from a basic cable network had won the prestigious award. Over the years, FX continued to produce groundbreaking series that captured the attention of both audiences and critics, with shows like “Shogun” and “The Bear” dominating the awards circuit.

Last year, FX made history by winning the most awards at the Emmy Awards, solidifying its position as a powerhouse in the television industry. FX chairman John Landgraf praised Solberg for his dedication to promoting the network’s creative partners and shows, emphasizing his passion for storytelling and journalism.

Solberg’s departure has been met with sadness from FX staff, as he was not only a respected colleague but also a beloved friend. His wife, Maeve, who passed away last year, was remembered fondly by FX talent past and present at her memorial service, highlighting the close-knit community that Solberg helped foster at the network.

In a heartfelt note to the company, Solberg expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work on groundbreaking shows and collaborate with talented individuals in the industry. He credited his success to the support of his family, colleagues, and Disney counterparts, acknowledging the compassion and support he received during difficult times.

While Solberg’s decision to step down was a difficult one, he expressed his confidence in the leadership team at FX and their ability to continue producing exceptional content. As he bids farewell to FX, Solberg leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of working with him.

Stay Fearless.

Godspeed,
John
