gang takedowns, gun seizures and precision policing

New York City recently achieved a significant milestone with its record low shootings and gun violence numbers, and experts attribute this success to a combination of factors. The efforts of the NYPD, city officials, and crime experts have played a crucial role in reducing crime rates in the Big Apple.

Christopher Herrmann, a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a former NYPD crime analyst supervisor, emphasized that the decrease in violent crimes is not a coincidence. He highlighted that New York’s achievement is part of a nationwide trend where violent crimes have been on the decline, particularly during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

One of the key factors contributing to the decrease in shootings and gun violence is the increase in gang takedowns. In 2025 alone, there have been 48 gang-related operations resulting in the arrest of 347 gang members and the recovery of 236 illegal guns. Police officials believe that by targeting known gang members and confiscating illegal firearms, they have been able to prevent shootings and protect the community.

Despite calls from some Progressive City Council members to abolish the NYPD’s gang database, law enforcement sources argue that the database has been instrumental in targeting violent criminals and reducing gun violence. The success of the gang takedowns and illegal gun seizures demonstrates the effectiveness of using data-driven strategies to combat crime.

Mayor Eric Adams praised the efforts of the NYPD in taking nearly 3,200 illegal guns off the streets this year, bringing the total number of confiscated firearms to approximately 23,000 since he took office. By removing guns from circulation, law enforcement aims to prevent potential shooters from causing harm in the city.

Precision policing, which involves analyzing data and strategically deploying officers to high-crime areas, has also been instrumental in reducing gun violence in New York City. By identifying and targeting areas with high shooting rates, the NYPD has been able to significantly decrease violence in those neighborhoods.

Overall, the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies, city officials, and community members have contributed to the record low shootings and gun violence in New York City. The focus on gang takedowns, illegal gun seizures, and precision policing has been crucial in making the city safer for its residents.
