Gas prices edge higher with Brent crude remaining above $100 per barrel
Gasoline prices saw a slight increase on Monday as Brent crude remained above $100 per barrel, largely due to the ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. This vital shipping lane for the global energy supply has been paralyzed amid the Iran war, leading to concerns about the impact on oil prices and the global economy.
According to data from AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas rose to $3.72 on Monday, up from $3.70 on Sunday. This represents an increase of almost 79 cents per gallon from a month earlier. Meanwhile, Brent crude, the international benchmark, slipped about 2.4% to $101.93 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate fell 4.1% to $94.62.
The rise in oil prices can be attributed to the attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel, which have led to disruptions in the Persian Gulf area. Iran has retaliated by targeting energy infrastructure in the region with drones and missiles, causing concerns about the stability of the global energy supply.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has forced oil producers to cut production as their crude has nowhere to go. This has raised fears in financial markets that prolonged closure of the strait could lead to a significant decrease in oil supply, driving up inflation and impacting the global economy.
Despite the tensions in the Middle East, the slight retreat in oil prices on Monday helped boost Wall Street, with the S&P 500 rising 1.3% in morning trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average also rose 1.2%, while the Nasdaq composite jumped 1.5%. Many professional investors are optimistic that the stock market will bounce back quickly from the conflict as long as oil prices do not remain too high for an extended period.
President Trump has called on other countries affected by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz to help safeguard the passage, promising U.S. assistance. European countries have demanded more clarity on Trump’s plans for the Iran war and how long the conflict might last. The White House Press Secretary emphasized the need for other countries to cooperate in addressing the threat posed by Iran and ensuring the security of the region.
Overall, the situation in the Middle East remains fluid, with uncertainties surrounding the conflict and its impact on the global economy. The international community is closely monitoring developments in the region and working towards a resolution to the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz.
