Gen Z professionals are flocking to Ann Arbor, Michigan instead of big cities

Ann Arbor, Michigan, Tops List of Best Cities for Gen Z Professionals

A recent survey by RentCafe.com has named Ann Arbor, Michigan, as the top city for Gen Z professionals out of 264 US metros evaluated. The study focused on key priorities for Gen Z individuals, including affordability, culture, diversity, environment, and overall livability.

After narrowing down the list to 122 metros by excluding cities with populations under 300,000 or lacking sufficient data, the rankings were determined based on metrics such as the share of Gen Z residents, education levels, unemployment changes, income and job growth, and a composite livability index that considered socioeconomics, community dynamics, and quality of life.

According to Mihaela Buzec, the author of the report, the goal was to help Gen Z graduates find cities that provide a balance between rewarding work opportunities and a good quality of life. Ann Arbor claimed the top spot due to its college-town appeal and competitive job market, driven by the presence of the University of Michigan.

The report also highlighted Lincoln, Nebraska, and Des Moines, Iowa, as close contenders following Ann Arbor. The trend observed among Gen Z professionals favors smaller, affordable cities with strong economic foundations and a university presence.

The shift in preferences among Gen Z professionals from large urban centers to more livable and affordable destinations was noted in the report. RentCafe.com highlighted cities such as El Paso, TX; McAllen, TX; Memphis, TN; Stockton, CA; and Lafayette, LA, as ranking at the bottom due to their lack of alignment with the core values of Gen Z regarding livability factors and the industries that drive the job market.
