General Kurilla who led US’ ‘Midnight Hammer’ strikes on Iran ends Middle East reign

Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla, a seasoned military officer who led U.S. troops in the Middle East for three years, has officially retired from military service. During his tenure as commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) starting in 2022, Kurilla oversaw the planning and execution of numerous major combined combat operations, including Operation Rough Rider targeting the Houthis in Yemen and Operation Midnight Hammer striking Iranian nuclear sites.

Operation Midnight Hammer, which took place in June, specifically targeted Iranian nuclear facilities Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The operation involved the deployment of over 125 U.S. aircraft, including B-2 stealth bombers, as well as a guided-missile submarine launching Tomahawk cruise missiles at key Iranian targets. Kurilla’s leadership in these operations earned him recognition as a bold and inspiring leader who prioritizes the safety and mission of U.S. troops.

Prior to his role at CENTCOM, Kurilla had an extensive career focusing on operations in the Middle East. From 2004 to 2014, he oversaw conventional and special operations forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Kurilla gained acclaim for his involvement in a firefight in Mosul, Iraq, in 2005, where he sustained multiple gunshot wounds, ultimately earning him a Bronze Star with valor and two Purple Heart awards.

After Kurilla’s retirement, U.S. Navy Adm. Brad Cooper assumed leadership of CENTCOM in early August. Cooper, who previously served as deputy commander of CENTCOM and oversaw U.S. Naval Forces Central Command in the Middle East, is well-versed in the region. He has spearheaded efforts to integrate unmanned service vessels into the fleet to enhance operations.

The official change of command ceremony took place in Tampa, Florida, where CENTCOM headquarters are located. Cooper expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead U.S. forces in the crucial mission of enhancing regional security and stability in the Central Command region. Kurilla’s retirement ceremony coincided with Cooper’s assumption of command, marking the transition of leadership within the organization.

Overall, Kurilla’s leadership at CENTCOM contributed significantly to bolstering partnerships, increasing the lethality of U.S. forces, and defending Americans and civilians abroad. Cooper looks forward to continuing this important mission and ensuring the continued success of U.S. operations in the Middle East under his command.
