George Santos’ prison sentence commuted, ex-GOP congressman to be released ‘immediately’: Trump
President Donald Trump announced on Friday evening that he has granted a commutation to former congressman George Santos, releasing him from prison immediately. Santos, 37, was serving a seven-year sentence for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Trump described Santos as a “rogue” who always supported Republican causes.
In a statement on social media, Trump mentioned that Santos had been mistreated and held in solitary confinement, prompting him to sign the commutation. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York, which prosecuted Santos, declined to comment on the decision.
The commutation, as shared by U.S. Pardon Attorney Ed Martin, includes releasing Santos from prison with no further conditions. Santos’ attorney expressed gratitude for the efforts of Martin and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche in securing the commutation. Several Republican members of Congress, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, and Tim Burchett, advocated for Santos’ release.
Santos pleaded guilty to various fraud charges in August 2024 and was sentenced to 87 months in prison. He admitted to fabricating campaign contributions, defrauding donors, and falsely claiming unemployment benefits during the pandemic. As part of his plea deal, Santos agreed to pay restitution and forfeiture amounting to nearly $600,000.
Despite Trump’s decision, some lawmakers criticized the commutation, arguing that Santos’ crimes warranted a longer sentence. New York GOP Rep. Nick LaLota emphasized the need for Santos to demonstrate remorse and make amends. Rep. Andrew Garbarino stated that less than three months in prison was insufficient punishment.
House Democrats also condemned Trump’s action, highlighting the need to address pressing issues like healthcare instead. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Trump for prioritizing the release of Santos over critical policy matters affecting Americans.
In conclusion, the commutation of George Santos’ sentence has sparked debate among lawmakers, with contrasting opinions on the appropriateness of the decision. Trump’s move has drawn criticism from both sides of the political aisle, underscoring the contentious nature of the decision.
