Georgia Cop Who Killed Rayshard Brooks Arrested for Assault in Atlanta

Atlanta Police Officer Garrett Rolfe, known for the controversial shooting of Rayshard Brooks in 2020, has found himself in trouble once again. This time, Rolfe has been arrested for assault after allegedly getting into a bar fight last month. The incident has caused quite a stir, with the 911 audio revealing explosive details of the altercation.

The Atlanta Police Department made the announcement on Wednesday, stating that Officer Rolfe was arrested for simple assault following a thorough investigation into the June 29 incident. Rolfe, who was placed on administrative leave after the brawl, was booked and his mug shot was released. Despite his arrest, he was seen smiling in the picture. Rolfe was released on a $2,000 bond.

According to reports, the incident took place at X Midtown, a bar north of downtown Atlanta. A man named Raefeael Penrice called 911, claiming that a person who identified himself as a police officer was drunk and following him around while he was trying to work. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Rolfe outside the bar, bleeding from his nose.

Rolfe explained to the officers that he was with a friend, identified as “Mr. Smith,” who had taken a picture of a bartender he believed had overcharged him for drinks. This led to a verbal altercation with a woman who claimed to be the bartender’s girlfriend. Rolfe alleged that Penrice started to shove Smith out of the bar, prompting Rolfe to intervene.

During the altercation, Rolfe claimed that Penrice grabbed him by the collar and neck. Despite trying to remove Penrice’s hand, Rolfe admitted to punching him in the body and face. Rolfe told the officers that Penrice never identified himself as security or wore any clothing indicating he was a security guard.

Penrice, on the other hand, claimed that Rolfe and Smith hit him first when he tried to escort them out of the bar. Witnesses to the incident corroborated Penrice’s account, stating that Rolfe and Smith initiated the physical altercation.

Penrice was arrested for battery and simple battery on the same day, while Rolfe was placed on leave pending an investigation. This incident comes after Rolfe made national headlines in 2020 for the fatal shooting of Rayshard Brooks. Initially facing a felony murder charge, Rolfe and his partner Devin Brosnan were later cleared of all charges by a special prosecutor in 2022.

The arrest of Garrett Rolfe for assault has once again put the spotlight on the Atlanta Police Department and raised questions about the conduct of law enforcement officers. The outcome of this latest incident remains to be seen as the investigation unfolds.
