Gilgo Beach DNA evidence in against Rex Heuermann ruled admissible

Long Island prosecutors have been given the green light to utilize crucial DNA evidence in their case against alleged Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann, as ruled by Judge Tim Mazzei on Wednesday.

This ruling comes as a significant win for Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney, whose case against the towering architect heavily relied on DNA matches linking Heuermann to the murders of seven sex workers between 1993 and 2010.

“The science was on our side, and that’s why we prevailed,” Tierney stated confidently to the press following the ruling.

Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, was present in court but opted not to comment after the decision was made.

Heuermann was apprehended outside his Manhattan office in July 2023 and charged with the killings of three sex workers whose bodies were discovered along remote areas of Long Island. Subsequently, he faced additional charges for four more deaths, bringing the total to seven victims – Valerie Mack, Melissa Taylor, Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Sandra Costilla, and Amber Lynn Costello.

These cases had remained unsolved until Suffolk County police reopened the investigation at Tierney’s insistence. New advancements in technology allowed for the testing of “degraded” DNA samples, like the hairs found on the victims, which were then linked to the crimes.

Despite defense attorney Michael Brown’s skepticism of the evidence, referring to it as “magic,” the judge’s ruling permits prosecutors to present the DNA evidence in the upcoming trial. Brown argued in court that Astrea Labs, the company responsible for the DNA testing, is not licensed in New York State, thus violating health laws by using the results. However, Mazzei’s decision upheld the admissibility of the evidence for the trial.

The case against Heuermann continues to unfold as prosecutors prepare to present the DNA evidence to solidify their claims against the alleged serial killer. The use of advanced technology in solving these cold cases serves as a testament to the relentless efforts of law enforcement in seeking justice for the victims and their families. Stay tuned for further updates on the Gilgo Beach murders as the trial progresses.
