Globoplay’s ‘Emergency 53’ Proves International Potential With Award

Globoplay, a major Brazilian streamer, has been making significant strides in establishing its international presence over the past five years. The goal is to create local content from South America that not only resonates globally but also makes a tangible impact in international markets and events. One of their original series has been featured at the Berlinale Series Market for three consecutive years, and recently, they were honored with the prestigious Studio Babelsberg Production Excellence Award for their upcoming series “Emergency 53.”

“Emergency 53” is the brainchild of the same creative team behind Globoplay’s successful procedural series “Under Pressure,” which includes Andrucha Waddington, Cláudio Torres, and Márcio Maranhão. The series, set to launch later this year, follows a group of doctors, nurses, and drivers of a special mobile service unit as they navigate personal and professional challenges. The series is produced by Conspiração, a banner led by Torres and Waddington.

The Berlinale Series Market jury praised “Emergency 53” for its confident grasp of the procedural form, compelling young protagonist, and diverse ensemble rich with emotional and narrative potential. They highlighted the series’ vibrant and complex setting, which adds texture, social relevance, and depth to the narrative, elevating it beyond traditional emergency room or police procedurals.

Alex Medeiros, head of content and fiction at Globoplay and Globo Filmes, expressed his pride in receiving the Studio Babelsberg Production Excellence Award. He emphasized the power of Brazilian stories to resonate with global audiences and acknowledged the growing momentum of Latin American content in international film and television.

Tanja Meissner, director of the Berlinale Pro, expressed delight in the successful collaboration with Studio Babelsberg and looks forward to continuing the partnership to promote outstanding global scripted series and set new creative standards together.

Andrucha Waddington shared the honor with his team and all Brazilian public healthcare workers, emphasizing the series’ specific focus on Brazil’s healthcare system and its universal themes of class inequality. Cláudio Torres added that working in an international landscape open to projects from different countries and cultures is a wonderful opportunity, citing the success of films like “Parasite” from South Korea as an example of the growing interest in diverse storytelling.

Overall, Globoplay’s dedication to creating high-quality, culturally relevant content is paying off, as they continue to make a mark on the global stage with their innovative and impactful series like “Emergency 53.”
