Gmail now uses AI to help you write messages and keep track of your inbox
Google announced on Thursday the launch of new artificial intelligence features in Gmail, aimed at modernizing the 22-year-old messaging app in response to the increasing use of AI technology. These new advancements are designed to assist users in composing messages, locating information within their email inboxes, and providing daily to-do lists. Initially, these AI features will only be available in English within the U.S., with some features accessible to all users for free, while others will require G1 Ultra and Pro subscriptions.
The tech giant, owned by Alphabet, is introducing these new email tools as it integrates functionality from its latest large language model, Gemini 3, into various online search and applications. However, this move comes amidst growing privacy concerns surrounding the use of generative AI and its potential access to personal information.
One of the key features being introduced is the ‘Help Me Write’ tool, which offers personalized writing aid by analyzing users’ previous emails to understand their writing style and provide real-time suggestions for composing emails. Additionally, Gmail will introduce an AI Overview feature to summarize email exchanges and highlight key takeaways from longer threads, available on both the web and mobile versions of the platform.
For paid Pro and Ultra subscribers, Google is offering a feature that allows users to ask natural-language questions directly in the Gmail search bar, along with access to a dedicated chatbot for follow-up inquiries. This technology enables users to search for specific information within their email history by posing questions, such as inquiring about last month’s electric bill.
Another feature, “AI Inbox,” is currently being tested with a select group of customers and offers suggestions for to-do lists and topics to explore based on the content of users’ emails. Additionally, the “Catch me up” tool will provide reminders for upcoming events, appointments, reservations, purchases, deliveries, and any canceled or rescheduled appointments.
While integrating AI directly into Gmail presents potential risks, users have the ability to opt out of these features by adjusting their account settings. By navigating to the “General” tab and unchecking the “Turn on smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet” option under the “Smart features and personalization” section, users can disable the AI functionalities.
Overall, Google’s introduction of AI features in Gmail represents a significant step towards enhancing user experience and productivity within the email platform, while also addressing privacy concerns associated with the use of generative AI technology.
