Golfer, 28, dies after being struck by lightning while playing on course in New Jersey

A tragic incident occurred at the Ballyowen Golf Course in Hamburg, New Jersey, last week when 28-year-old golfer Simon John Mariani was struck by lightning while playing on the course. The unfortunate event took place at the 15th hole while Mariani was participating in an all-day Iron Man golf competition.

Brian Delia, a fellow golfer who witnessed the lightning strike, described the moment as unexpected and captured the stormy clouds on camera at the 14th hole before seeking safety in the clubhouse. Delia mentioned that Mariani’s father, who was playing with him, immediately administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while other golfers provided CPR until authorities arrived on the scene.

The Hardyston Police Department received a 911 call at approximately 1:53 p.m. and provided care to Mariani until paramedics arrived. He was then airlifted to the hospital for further treatment. Unfortunately, Mariani succumbed to his injuries on Monday, as confirmed by his family in an obituary posted on the funeral home’s website.

Mariani, who worked as an associate at MTS Health Partners in New York City, was described as driven, dedicated, smart, and exceptionally talented in his obituary. He had a love for Taylor Swift, embraced all things family, and possessed the heart of a champion. Survived by his parents, two sisters, and numerous cherished family members and friends, Mariani will forever be remembered by those whose lives he touched.

Funeral services for Simon John Mariani are scheduled for Friday, providing an opportunity for loved ones to come together to honor his memory and celebrate his life. May he rest in peace.
