Google December Pixel Drop: Android 16 Update Brings Major New Features
Google has recently rolled out the Android 16 QPR2 update for Pixel smartphone users, introducing a host of new features in what is being called the December Pixel Drop. This update is more than just a security patch, offering Google Pixel 6 users and newer models a variety of tools and enhancements.
To check if the update is available for your Pixel phone, simply go to Settings > System > Software updates and tap on System update.
Here are some of the standout features of the new Android 16 update:
Pin Tabs in Chrome:
One of the most practical additions is the ability to pin tabs at the top of the Chrome web browser. This feature is a game-changer for those who frequently refer back to specific tabs but tend to lose track of them easily.
AI Notification Summaries:
Google now provides AI-powered notification summaries that allow users to quickly glance at the contents of incoming notifications without having to open them individually. This feature aims to streamline notification management, similar to Apple’s iOS feature but with Google’s touch.
Urgent Call Alerts:
The Call Reason feature, currently in beta, allows users to flag a call to a saved contact as “urgent.” This designation will appear to the recipient, indicating the importance of the call even before they answer. If the call is missed, the urgency tag will remain in the call history, prompting the recipient to call back promptly.
AI Scam Detection:
Circle to Search feature now includes AI scam detection, providing insights on whether an incoming message may be a scam. This feature draws information from the internet to determine the legitimacy of the message and offers appropriate next steps if it’s deemed a scam.
Expressive Captions in Live Videos:
Expressive Captions feature detects emotions expressed in live videos and adds emotion tags accordingly. While this feature may not be relevant to all users, it enhances the viewing experience for those who engage in video messages or live streams.
New Split Screen Options:
The December update introduces a new split-screen option that allows users to run two apps in a 90:10 split ratio, providing a significant portion of the screen to one app while allocating a smaller section to another. This feature enhances multitasking capabilities and improves overall efficiency.
Emoji Mash-ups:
Gboard now offers emoji mash-ups, combining two emojis to create new variations. For example, combining a hug emoji with a monkey emoji results in a pair of hugging monkeys. This feature adds a fun and creative element to messaging and communication.
Overall, the Android 16 QPR2 update brings a range of new features and enhancements to Google Pixel smartphones, catering to a diverse range of user needs and preferences. Whether it’s streamlining notification management, improving communication urgency, or adding creative elements to messaging, this update aims to enhance the user experience on Pixel devices.
