Google Nest Learning Thermostat Support Comes to an End
Important Updates for Nest Thermostat Users
In summary
- Support for gen 1 and 2 Nest Thermostats ends on 25 October
- No more Google Home or Nest app support or software updates
- Will be limited to on-device controls for basic features
If you own an older Google Nest Learning Thermostat, it’s time to take note. The countdown to the end of full smart functionality for these devices is almost over.
In a recent announcement back in May, Google revealed its plan to discontinue support for older Nest thermostats. The termination date is set for 25 October, just around the corner.
Starting on 25 October, 1st and 2nd gen Nest thermostats will no longer be compatible with or work within the Google Nest app or Google Home app.
After this date, older Nest thermostats will be automatically unpaired and removed from your Nest and Home apps, with no option for users to retain them. Third-party assistant interactions and other connected features like Home/Away Assist and Nest Protect connectivity will also cease to function.
This means that remote control and status monitoring of your Nest thermostat will no longer be possible. You will be restricted to direct control of the thermostat itself, similar to a traditional non-smart thermostat.
Here is the complete list of Nest Thermostats that will be affected by the discontinuation:
- Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen, 2011)
- Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, 2012)
- Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, Europe version, 2014)

What options are there for Nest customers?
For Nest customers, the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd gen remains as the primary viable smart thermostat option from Google. Additionally, the Nest Thermostat E is available while supplies last, although it is no longer officially sold in the UK or Europe.
Customers may also consider the Tado Smart Thermostat X – Starter Kit, which offers a 50% discount for eligible users. However, be mindful of the subscription requirements for full functionality.
The Nest Thermostat 4th gen, introduced over a year ago, is currently exclusive to North America. Older-gen Nest thermostat owners in this region can avail of a $130 discount for an upgrade.
Google’s future plans for wider availability of its current thermostat models remain uncertain. The company has indicated that it will not introduce new Nest thermostats in Europe, citing challenges with heating systems in the region.
While the Nest Thermostat gen 3 and Thermostat E will continue to receive security updates and app control, the duration of this support remains unspecified.
Despite the discontinuation of older Nest thermostats, Google Home users can anticipate the arrival of Gemini and new devices like the Home Speaker and Nest Hub.
