Google Pixel 9a in New York: 5 Brilliant Benefits, 1 Fatal Flaw

The year 2025 has seen smartphones become an essential tool for travel, with features like boarding passes, GPS navigation, and photography making them indispensable. Recently, I had the opportunity to review Google’s Pixel 9a before a trip to New York, and while it impressed me at home, it faced a different test on the bustling streets of Manhattan.

The Pixel 9a proved itself in many areas during my time in NYC, showcasing five standout benefits. However, it also revealed a significant downside that would make me hesitant to recommend it for travel.

### A Fine Design
Navigating a new city like New York requires frequent use of Google Maps, and the Pixel 9a’s lightweight and compact design made it easy to hold for extended periods. Despite not being the lightest phone on the market, its 6.3-inch screen was comfortably pocketable and provided a clear viewing experience.

### What a Display
The Pixel 9a’s P-OLED screen offered excellent quality, with vibrant colors and a fast 120Hz refresh rate for smooth performance. The 949-nit maximum brightness was particularly useful in bright outdoor settings like Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park.

### Heavyweight Performance
Powered by Google’s Tensor chipset, the Pixel 9a delivered strong performance for everyday tasks like navigation, web browsing, and photography. While it may not match flagship processors, it handled multitasking without any noticeable slowdowns.

### Great Battery Life, Finally!
One of the Pixel A series’ weaknesses has been battery life, but the Pixel 9a’s 5100mAh cell exceeded expectations. Even on demanding days in New York, the phone had ample charge left by bedtime, making it one of the best in terms of battery life among Pixel phones.

### Killer Photography…
The highlight of the Pixel 9a was its cameras, especially the 48MP main rear lens. The phone consistently produced vibrant and well-exposed photos with strong dynamic range and low-light performance. The realistic skin tones and quality selfies from the front-facing camera were also impressive.

### …Except When You Want to Zoom
While the Pixel 9a’s cameras excelled in most areas, the lack of a telephoto lens for optical zoom was a notable drawback. Without the ability to zoom in on distant subjects, the phone’s digital zoom options were limited and led to a drop in image quality past 2x magnification.

In conclusion, while the Pixel 9a offers many strengths for everyday use, its limitations in zoom capabilities make it less suitable for travel, especially in a city like New York. For those seeking a reliable travel companion, the Pixel 9 Pro XL may be a better choice. However, there are also other great alternatives available in the market for travelers to consider.
