Google retains spot as world’s most popular internet service, but AI is growing fast
Generative artificial intelligence has taken the internet by storm, with ChatGPT emerging as one of the most popular destinations online. According to a recent report from Cloudflare, ChatGPT has secured its place among the top 40 websites on the internet, showcasing the rapid growth and maturation of AI technology among users worldwide.
Launched by OpenAI in November 2022, ChatGPT has quickly amassed a staggering 700 million active users as of September, solidifying its position as a powerhouse in the AI space. Cloudflare, a leading provider of cloud computing services, reported a significant 19% increase in global internet traffic this year, underscoring the growing reliance on technology for daily communication and entertainment.
To compile their rankings, Cloudflare utilized aggregated data from their Domain Name System, which plays a crucial role in routing traffic to websites by converting domain names to IP addresses. This methodology allowed them to identify the most widely used websites and services across various categories in 2025.
At the top of the list of overall internet services, Google continues to reign supreme, with Google Maps and Google Calendar contributing to its dominance. Facebook holds strong in the second position, maintaining its status as a top contender for three consecutive years. Other notable names in the top 10 include Apple, Microsoft, Instagram, and Amazon Web Services.
In the realm of social media, Meta-owned Facebook retains its position as the leading platform globally, with Instagram and TikTok following closely behind. Despite facing challenges such as a temporary legal ban in the U.S., TikTok remains a key player in the social media landscape.
When it comes to generative AI services, ChatGPT stands out as the frontrunner, facing stiff competition from rival chatbots like Anthropic’s Claude, Perplexity, and Google Gemini. The AI space is evolving rapidly, with platforms like Character.AI, GitHub Copilot, and QuillBot also making their mark in the industry.
In the e-commerce sector, Amazon continues to dominate, with Shopee and Temu, two Asia-based companies, making significant strides in the rankings. Shopee, a Singaporean e-commerce platform, clinched the second spot, while China’s Temu secured third place, showcasing the global nature of the e-commerce landscape.
As technology continues to advance and AI becomes more integrated into everyday life, it’s clear that platforms like ChatGPT are here to stay. With innovative developments on the horizon, the future of generative AI promises to revolutionize how we interact with technology and each other online.
