Goon busted after NYC man found bashed to death in apartment: cops

A tragic incident occurred in the Bronx when a heartless assailant brutally attacked a 44-year-old man in his apartment, leaving him with fatal injuries. The victim, Joel Rivera, was assaulted by Richard Vasquez, 37, on Jan. 21 inside his residence on Nereid Avenue near Bronx Boulevard in Wakefield, a supportive housing development for veterans. Rivera, who sustained head trauma during the attack, was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center where he fought for his life for six days before succumbing to his injuries.

The city medical examiner’s office ruled Rivera’s death as a homicide, leading to the arrest of Vasquez on Feb. 14 on charges of murder. Vasquez, who resided just a half-mile away from the crime scene, was held without bail during his arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court and is scheduled to appear before a judge on March 16.

Details surrounding the weapon used in the attack and the motive behind the violence remain unclear. However, Rivera’s loved ones remember him fondly for his infectious smile, playful spirit, and love for cooking. Described as someone who lived life to the fullest and embraced each moment with enthusiasm, Rivera was also known for his hospitality and generosity, always willing to share a meal with others. His family shared that Rivera was an organ donor, highlighting his compassionate nature and willingness to help others even in death.

Rivera is survived by his mother, sister, niece, nephew, and his beloved dog, Scarlito, whom he adored and spoiled endlessly. His family and friends mourn the loss of a kind-hearted individual who brought joy and laughter wherever he went. As they remember his vibrant personality and zest for life, they honor his memory and the impact he had on those around him.
