GOP congressman facing eviction blames broken payment links for $85K in unpaid rent
Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) is currently facing possible eviction from his luxury penthouse apartment in Washington, DC, due to a faulty payment portal that has prevented him from paying $85,000 in rent. The congressman’s upscale residence, overlooking the Potomac River, comes with a steep monthly price tag of $20,833. Situated on the penthouse level of his building, the apartment offers residents exclusive access through private elevators, captivating views, bold Italian cabinetry, Calacatta quartz countertops, and services akin to a world-class hotel.
The building, once home to former President Joe Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi, has been the subject of a legal dispute between Mills and his landlord. Documents filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia reveal that Mills has not made a rent payment since March.
In response to reports of the eviction case, Mills took to social media to defend himself. He shared screenshots of emails sent to his landlord in June and July, indicating that the payment link provided to him was not functioning. The congressman argued that the error code he received pointed to a problem on the landlord’s end, not his own.
Despite Mills’ claims of attempting to resolve the payment issue, the landlord’s ledger shows that the congressman has been consistently late on his rent payments since moving into the upscale residence in June of 2023. A spokesperson for Mills stated that he has been in contact with the landlord to address the payment link problem and settle his outstanding bill.
With an initial hearing date set for September in the eviction case, Mills faces the possibility of losing his luxurious DC apartment if the payment issue remains unresolved. The congressman’s office has yet to provide a comment on the situation, leaving the fate of his penthouse residence hanging in the balance.
