Greg Abbott threatens ‘100% tariff’ on people fleeing NYC if Zohran Mamdani wins
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made a bold threat against New Yorkers considering a move to the Lone Star State if Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor. In a tweet on the eve of the mayoral election, Abbott warned that he would impose a “100% tariff” on anyone relocating from NYC to Texas.
The reasoning behind Abbott’s threat remains unclear, and it is uncertain whether such a tariff would be feasible. Mamdani, known for his “Tax the rich” policy, has sparked concerns of a mass exodus of New York City’s wealthiest residents, with a recent poll indicating that over 750,000 individuals may consider leaving.
Joining other Republican critics, Abbott has taken aim at Mamdani’s progressive platform, cautioning voters against supporting him. Former President Trump has also weighed in on the election, endorsing Mamdani’s rival, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent candidate. Trump urged New Yorkers to vote for Cuomo, stating that Mamdani is not capable of governing effectively.
In addition to his tariff threat, Abbott has also suggested that federal funds could be withheld from New York City if Mamdani wins the mayoral race. Trump echoed this sentiment, warning that he may limit financial support to the city if the “Communist Candidate” emerges victorious.
As New Yorkers headed to the polls, the political landscape was charged with tension and uncertainty. The outcome of the election will not only shape the future of the city but also have broader implications for the relationship between New York and Texas. The clash between progressive policies and conservative opposition underscores the deep political divisions in the country, with both sides vying for control and influence.
