Gunman announced gang affiliation before shooting 2 on CTA bus: prosecutors

Man Proudly Declares Gang Affiliation Before Opening Fire on CTA Bus, Injuring Two Passengers
Prosecutors have revealed shocking details about a recent incident where a man proudly declared his gang affiliation before opening fire on a CTA bus, resulting in injuries to two passengers. What makes this case even more disturbing is the fact that the accused was reportedly on probation for another gun-related offense at the time of the incident.
According to prosecutors, the incident took place on April 27 around 11:33 p.m. when a 40-year-old man boarded a westbound #77 Belmont bus with his girlfriend. The man sat in front of 18-year-old William Soto, who initiated a conversation with him during the ride.
Soto allegedly stood up and proclaimed his affiliation with the Maniac Latin Disciples gang to the man, stating, “I’m a Man.” As the couple prepared to exit the bus, Soto threatened the man, indicating that he had something for him outside. The man’s girlfriend noticed a gun in Soto’s possession and prevented her boyfriend from exiting the bus.
Once outside, Soto reportedly fired multiple shots through the rear doors of the bus, striking the 40-year-old man in the thigh and injuring a 22-year-old passenger who was not involved in the altercation. Both victims received medical treatment and were released from the hospital on the same night.
Chicago police investigators obtained video evidence from various sources, including CTA cameras and residential Ring cameras, which captured the shooting and Soto’s escape from the scene. One video allegedly shows Soto fleeing the area and entering his residence following the incident.
William Soto has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm toward an occupied vehicle, and unlawful use of a weapon. He has been detained by Judge Ankur Srivastava due to concerns about public safety.
